Ireland's Homes Interiors & Living

We are proud to have been featured in Ireland's Homes Interiors & Living recent interview that covers our career in the design industry:

‘I've always had an aura of creativity that has driven me,' explains Sebastian Conran, designer and inventor. 'I originally wanted to be an inventor and began pursuing a Masters that would have helped me continue in that direction, but my father encouraged me to be more involved in design, much like himself, and so I went on to study industrial design.'

While studying at Central St Martins, Sebastian took up the role of Union Treasurer, gave the Sex Pistols their first booking and began designing record sleeves, posters and clothing for The Clash. So while he officially finished with a degree in Industrial Design Engineering, he unofficially graduated, as he recalls jovially, 'In rock'n'roll'. Before founding his own product design studio, Sebastian Conran Associates in 1986, Sebastian worked doing corporate identity design and then became the lead merchandise designer at Mothercare, a role that transformed the appearance and performance of childcare equipment. In 1999 SCA merged with the Conran group after some prompting from his father, designer Terence Conran and Sebastian was responsible for all product and branding design. 2009 brought the welcome re-establishment of SCA in a purpose-built studio workshop in Kensington, where Sebastian now has 12 people working under him.

'We ship our products all over the world, but we always think of the recipients as customers, not clients,' says Sebastian. 'I design by thinking about how people chose products, how things are used and the things that people need. We have to be aware that style is not the key to good design, its important, but functional innovation is the foundation to making something desirable.' Having experienced manufacturing from a young age, Sebastian has always' taken a hands-on, down-to-earth approach to all his projects. To this day he is intimately involved in all the design aspects from innovation to production, and is keen to share his wealth of experience and manufacturing expertise with his design team.

'There is expert quality in our products and a neutral elegance that makes each product fit into a multitude of homes. Ultimately it's outstanding design that I value. If a product is too complicated to use, then that's down to poor design. We're enhancing the experience of life with key ideas.'

SCA has launched over 300 products which are available in a multitude of stores and recently Sebastian has been working with a Tanzanian company to develop simple and affordable phone chargers and lights that will bring a new quality of life to people in Tanzania .
