Biomimetic

MiRo is an animal-like, advanced, robot designed to help students learn about STEM subjects, particularly computing and digital technologies. MiRo is intended to be engaging, appeal to everyone, and to interact in a natural way.

Designed as an educational platform, a combination of simulation software and the physical robot encouraged users to develop ‘behaviours’ for MiRo. From how it plays with a ball, navigates a maze to playing five a side football, MiRo offers students an engaging introduction into writing and implementing Code.

Development

SCA were commissioned to design the robot in conjunction with Sheffield University. The character and form of the robot has been carefully developed to be friendly and approachable without feeling toy-like. The companion robot gradually evolves from a simple reactive mammal to a cognitive being.
